PRODUCTION NOTES
Grahame had the idea for the opening riff in 1977. It took a few weeks to find a verse and chorus that fitted with it, but the lyrics came quickly, which surprised him because he’d always struggled with that, and suddenly he realised 'Wow, I’ve written my first song!' Legend has it that he turned up at a practice session in Dave Mackridge’s dad's garage, with this song completely written. The problem was that the chorus was too high for his voice, so Mick sang that part. Mick may have come up with the lyrics for the chorus but, once again, no one really remembers. It was recorded in 1977 as the A side of the NME contest submission, with Phil Faint on drums, Pat Thomas on organ and Steve Pilcher on bass. Grahame recently revised the lyrics to fit into two verses, added an outro and he and Mick re-recorded it in May 2018. It was the final track that they recorded for this album
LYRICS
A cobbled road shares my load
An icy wind forced its way inside my clothes.
It was then I started thinking
Man, I’ve been lied to and worse
She’s turned into an Ice Queen
So I’m running from her curse
Chorus:
And that’s why I’m back on the road again
It’s not because I've nowhere better to be
I’m just gonna have to start all over again
And you’re gonna have to find another best friend
The wind blew hot
Then the wind blew cold
And that cold gust drives me south,
Down this old cobbled road
To a land where warm-hearted women
Don’t tear a man in two
I should be there by sunrise
I’ll let you know if I make it through
Chorus
I'm going down this old cobbled road
Follow me down this old cobbled road
A cobbled road shares my load
An icy wind forced its way inside my clothes.
It was then I started thinking
Man, I’ve been lied to and worse
She’s turned into an Ice Queen
So I’m running from her curse
Chorus:
And that’s why I’m back on the road again
It’s not because I've nowhere better to be
I’m just gonna have to start all over again
And you’re gonna have to find another best friend
The wind blew hot
Then the wind blew cold
And that cold gust drives me south,
Down this old cobbled road
To a land where warm-hearted women
Don’t tear a man in two
I should be there by sunrise
I’ll let you know if I make it through
Chorus
I'm going down this old cobbled road
Follow me down this old cobbled road
