PRODUCTION NOTES
This was the first new song that Mick and Grahame wrote in the summer of 2017. Grahame recorded a demo of this played on the piano - it was a jaunty little song about a chap who loved gambling, with a chorus about how he didn’t mind losing his winnings as long as he could do it all over again. Grahame’s wife refers to this as his version of My Way. Mick added the slightly darker section at the end of the verse and wrote the lyrics for the subsequent verses. While walking in the woods, humming the song, he also had the idea of creating a counter melody in the chorus. But it didn't sound right with the same voice. Step in Mrs T - Leah Taylor - and friend Donna Lawson, visiting from the UAE, who knocked off her part in an hour while her thirsty husband was hassling producer and artiste to hurry up and get off to the pub.
LYRICS
In the spring of 1848, took a riverboat down the Mississippi
To try my luck in New Orleans, where the gambling’s good and the girls are pretty
Won a stack of chips on number 6 and soon found I had company
She nodded over at the door, kissed my lips and slipped me her key
I gave my heart to Lady Luck
And won real big but lost it all by dawn
Chorus 1:
And if I had a second chance, I’d spin the wheel and do it all again
(Cut the cards with Lady Luck, take a chance with Lady Luck)
And if I had a final wish, I’d roll the dice and do it all again
In the summer of 1849, struck gold in a mine in California
So I went to town to have some fun and mess around with my old senora
I put the money from the mine on Number 9, then I started getting bolder,
Lady Luck was looking fine, with a black fur coat and a cigarette holder
Made a buck with Lady Luck
And won real big but lost it all by dawn
Chorus 2:
And if I had a second chance, I’d spin the wheel and do it all again
(Cut the cards with Lady Luck, take a chance with Lady Luck)
And if I had a final wish, I’d roll the dice and do it all again
(Cut the cards with Lady Luck, take a chance with Lady Luck)
And if I had another life, I’d spin the wheel and do it all again
In the final winter of my life, grew to harking back to youthful pleasures
So this old timer, this 49er, left in search of Klondike treasure
You’re never too old to see a pot of gold at the end of every rainbow
I slogged out through the snow to stake my claim
And I made my bed with Lady Luck, dreamed real big but froze to death by dawn
Chorus 3 :
And if I had a second chance, I’d spin the wheel and do it all again
(Cut the cards with Lady Luck, take a chance with Lady Luck)
And if I had a final wish, I’d roll the dice and do it all again
(Cut the cards with Lady Luck, take a chance with Lady Luck)
