PRODUCTION NOTES
This is mostly Mick’s baby. He wrote the great guitar part for the verses and lyrics inspired by a wedding he’d been to in a garden of an English country home, where the festivities were interrupted, but not dampened, by a rainstorm. The title comes from the irony of people turning out in their best gear, only to find themselves cheerfully wading through a quagmire. Grahame wrote the chorus using Mick’s lyrics for the first verse so Mick had to go back to the drawing board and rewrite the verses. Mick managed to keep them positive, despite briefly - very briefly - considering a storyline in which the wedding is attacked by terrorists!
LYRICS
At a country house in the month of May
Friends and lovers toast a wedding day
In a white marquee out on the lawn
Where the party’s going on till dawn
Ladies in designer hats and heels
Fill the air with laughs and happy squeals
But a passing shower blows on in
Soaking everybody to the skin
Chorus:
Muddy stilettos in the pouring rain
Sipping on a glass of pink Champagne
Muddy stilettos on a blushing bride
Squelching through the English countryside
Aunty Sybil’s dancing in the rain
Uncle Dave is jiving with cousin Jayne
As the staff bring out the wedding cake
Wading through a quickly growing lake
Chorus
Everybody’s suits look worse for wear
But the happy couple just don’t care
And the groom turns to his soggy wife
And says: ‘This has been the best day of my life’
